School-based training in ACT

This brief article describes the School Based New Apprentices program, developed by the ACT Construction Industry Training Council. The program is one initiative by the Council to meet future training and skills needs of the local construction industry. The program encourages young people to complete their secondary education whilst gaining both a Year 12 Certificate and a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification. The program has involved students from ACT and regional NSW schools with employment and training provided by ACT group training companies. Students undertake both on-the-job and off-the-job training with work blocks organised during school term breaks. Students are paid award wages and may undertake further trade training with their employer as apprentices with advanced standing on completion of Year 12.
