A Study of Polysemy in English Based on Metaphor and Metonymy

Abstract

Polysemy is a significant language phenomenon,which is mainly realized by means of metaphor and metonymy.Metaphor and metonymy are not only two kinds of rhetorical devices,but two keys for expanding words’ meaning.Metaphor is the mapping from source domain to target domain based on the similarity.Metonymy is the mapping in the same domain among different things based on contiguity and salience.Metaphor and metonymy are not absolutely opposed.
