Abstract

A series of investigations relative to the pickllng of the Zircaloys prior to corrosion exposure ig described. The feasibility of utilizing common ion neutralization, and sulfuric acid rinses subsequent to pickling to facilitate surface cleaning and minimize acid entrapment was inveatigated. Investigations of various addition agents to the aqueous nitric acid-hydrofluoric acid pickling solutions were made to evaluate pickling rates, surface smoothness, cage in rinsing, and effects upon subsequent corrosion properties. The corrosion evaluations of a hydrochloric acid-hydrofluoric acid etchant and nitric and sulfuric acid-hydrofluoric acid solutions were made. (auth)
