The report is designed to provide a simple and complete picture of how and why people travel and what the major influences are on their choice of transport. This edition is a revised and updated version of an earlier report and is based on data from the 1978-79 national travel survey. The influence of various factors on the number of journeys made are analysed and the results tabulated according to travel mode, length of journey, purpose, vehicle ownership etc. Analyses are also given of the variations in travel patterns that result from different locational, social and economic characteristics.
