AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FOUND IN "INSIDE OUT" MOVIE

Abstract

Figurative language often appear in every literary work and used by the author to gain special meaning and effect. Previously, There are many studies related to analysis of figurative language in the literary work such as novel, poem, song, etc. Furthermore, in learning process, the analysis figurative language in poem and song more often implemented than the analysis figurative language in the movie. Whereas, there are also many figurative languages can be found from the movie. \n \nThe purpose of this study is divided into two parts. The first purpose is to find out the kinds of figurative language used in the movie. The second purpose is to explain the meanings of figurative language in the movie. \n \nThe approach of this study was qualitative research approach since it was designed to get information about the kinds of figurative language in "Inside Out" movie and its meaning. Meanwhile, the technique used in this study were content analysis technique. In analyzing figurative language in this study, the researcher used the theory of Abrams (1999) and supported by the theories of Perrine (2008), Keraf (2000), and Pradopo (2012). \n \nFrom the result of study, the researcher found 13 figurative languages for 122 utterances. The most dominant figurative language used in this movie was Imagery with 41 utterances. Besides, the researcher also found the different meaning of each figurative language according to its context and situation when it is said.
