AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FOUND IN THE FAULT IN OUR STARS NOVEL BY JOHN GREEN

The title of this study is An Analysis of Figurative Language Found in The Fault in Our stars novel by John Green. The objectives of the study are to describe the types, the structure, and the function of the figurative language found in the novel. The research tried to answer the first question by making lists of figurative language and grouping them based on types proposed by Leech (1981). Based on the definition of figurative language, structures were formulated based on the categories and sub-categories of figurative language types. To describe the function, the research analyzes the purposes of using the figurative language in conversation The result shows that there were 119 data of figurative language, which were: 29 or 24% data of personification, 15 or 13% data of simile, 23 or 19% data of metaphor, 39 or 33% data of hyperbole, 4 or 3% data of Metonymy, 9 or 8% data of litotes, 0 data of irony and oxymoron. The result also described about structure and function of the figurative language. This indicates that the author of the novel is using so many different types of figurative language to express and create an image to certain moment, atmosphere, character, and situation.
