Abstract

Intangible goods are increasingly protected by intellectual property. Therefore, software should follow this trend. Nevertheless, a close study on the nature of software and the different computer industry models shows that strategies based upon software intellectual property are technically implementable only in personal computing. The system effect derived from the combination of hardware and software obviates intellectual property for mainframes or web applications. JEL codes: O34, L63, L86
