Abstract
The Pearson r correlation coefficient measures the degree of the linear relationship between two variables. The degree of the relationship is expressed by the letter r ; r can be positive (higher scores on one variable are associated with higher scores on the other variable), negative (higher scores on one variable are associated with lower scores on the other variable), or zero (no relationship between the scores on the two variables). The values of the correlation coefficient can range from –1.0 (a perfect negative relationship) to 1.0 (a perfect positive relationship). An example where the Pearson r correlation coefficient may be used is presented next.
