Abstract

This chapter discusses the process of determining the need for and the types, implementation, and teaching considerations of assistive technology (AT) services and devices. It aims to help physical educators understand and use technology to serve all students, including those who use assistive devices. Physical educators and related service professionals should familiarize themselves with a family&s;s cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds as they relate to the use of AT devices. Low-tech AT devices are readily available, low-cost, off-the-shelf, or devised by the physical educator and student from common objects. High-tech AT devices include some communication devices, tablet computers, MP3 players, smartphones, smart boards, and other visual and auditory devices that can be accessed quickly. The chapter discusses technology applications available to physical educators to help improve communication with their students and enhance teaching. Communication may be verbal, but it may also involve body language, sign language, and communication boards.
