Abstract
Assistive technologies bring numerous social and personal benefits to people with disabilities by encouraging them to participate in economic and social activities. This study aims to classify current assistive technologies by their functions and characteristics. The research scope is limited to assistive technologies for people with visual, hearing, and physical disabilities. A total of 508 assistive technologies were collected from academic literature (journals, conference proceedings, books, etc.) and commercial catalogs. A total of 18 assistive functions were extracted and defined from the collected assistive technologies. The assistive functions were classified into six categories based on the daily activities related to the assistive functions. Additionally, the characteristics and research trends of the assistive functions were identified. The results will help assistive device designers and researchers in gathering information about recent representative assistive technologies and their functions.
