Abstract

Laser based coating removal was investigated as a means of reducing hazardous emissions and generation of secondary waste during coating removal. Plasma spectroscopy was investigated for its applicability in providing real-time sensor feedback, often required to protect the integrity of sub-coatings and the substrate. Plasma spectroscopy has been successfully demonstrated to differentiate between individual coatings and may be used to determine when the aluminum substrate has been reached. It is believed that with additional effort to fully characterize the spectral emissions of specific coatings, this system can be very effective in providing useful feedback for laser-based coating removal systems.
