Abstract

"NOAA Fleet Hazardous Materials and Hazardous Waste Management" details the objectives, development, and implementation of a hazardous materials and hazardous waste program for NOAA hydrographic, oceanographic, and fishery research ships. The paper discusses key elements for development of the program, namely, conducting shipboard and ship base hazardous materials and hazardous waste surveys, reviewing EPA and OSHA regulations, developing a hazardous materials and hazardous waste manual for shipboard use, and conducting hazardous materials and hazardous waste awareness training. The paper also discusses implementation of the resulting hazardous materials and hazardous waste policy, content of the manual, training information, shipboard and shoreside procedures, and maintenance of the program to reflect changing hazardous materials and hazardous waste regulations and shipboard needs.
