Abstract

The United States maintains a civil program to provide meteorological observations from spacecraft in both polar and geostationary orbits. The program is managed by the National Oceanic and Amospheric Administration (NOAA) of the Department of Commerce. The National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), a subunit of NOAA, plans and operates the satellite systems, produces and distributes weather products based on satellite data, and archives the data.
