An Pragmatics Analysis On Deixis In “The Black Cat” Short Story

Abstract

The study of pragmatics deals with deixis in short story. The aims of this study are: to analyze forms of deixis and the functions of deixis. The source of the analyzed is Edgar Allan Poe’s short story entitled “THE BLACK CAT” was pubsihed in 1843. The theories used in this study were taken from Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996). Using qualitative method the data we were taken in various steps such as reading and observing the short story, underlining deixis, identifying and classifying the deixis into their forms, displaying forms of deixis in a frame-data, explaining the findings and analyzing the functions of deixis words. Then, the results of this study are as follows: There are 50 data of deixis, the dominant forms of deixis found is person deixis18 data, then temporal deixis showed 14 data and place deixis had 6 data, while discourse deixis10 data and social deixis took in the last position had 2 data.
