Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of deixis and the functions of deixis in dialogues found in “The Notebook” novel by Nicholas Sparks. Qualitative approach is used to collect the dialogues.Whilethe theories used in this study are theories on types of deixis and functions of deixis by Levinson’s (1983) and Kreidler’s (2002). The aims of this study are to describe the types of deixis they are person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis and also to describe functions of deixis that appear on the dialogues between the characters in “The Notebook”. The result of the study shows there are 58 deixis found which are divided into five type. 20 out of 58 data are identified as person deixis,spatial deixis showed 10 data, temporal deixis had 15 data, 7 data showed discourse deixis, the last social deixis showed 6 data. Person deixis becomes the dominant type of deixis from this study. Keywords: Linguistics, Pragmatics, Deixis, Types, Functions, Qualitative.
