Abstract

Spatial sense and geometric reasoning in primary schools involves identifying, matching, sorting and arranging shapes. It also involves describing locations as well as giving and following directions. How do we assess informal geometry when it consists of investigations and hands on activities that don't require right or wrong answers? How do teachers know if their students 'know it'? Examples of alternate assessment strategies are provided including: Class or small group discussion, observation/anecdotal notes, and student journals.
