The Flouting Maxims Used by The Main Character In Magic Hour movie

This thesis analyzed the flouting maxim used by the main character in magic hour movie. The writer used Grice’s theory to analyze the flouting maxim in this study to conduct the research. Flouting maxims is people deliberate cease to obey cooperative principle. There are four kinds of flouting maxims; they are flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of relevant and flouting maxim of manner. The writer chooses to analyze flouting maxim because this phenomenon is happened in around her. Therefore the writer discusses about what the types of flouting maxims used by the main character in magic hour movie and what are the purposes of flouting maxim used by the main character in magic hour movie. The writer analyses flouting maxim to help the readers to improve the accuracy of language communication especially when they flouted. Based on the reasons above, this research used the descriptive analysis to describe the data use Grice theory. Magic hour is the data source and the sentence and utterance are the data which the writer has transcribed from the movie magic hour. In addition, the writer kind all the types of flouting maxim used by the main character. In this research the writer found 21 flouted maxim. They are 2 flouted maxim of quality, 5 flouted maxim of quantity, 12 flouted maxim of relevant and 2 flouted maxim of manner. There are some purposes why the main character used the flouting maxim. They are to hiding something, to give more explanation, to stressing something, to avoid talking about something, to change the conversation topic, to avoid the bad situation, to annoying, to get explanation and to be clear. Thus the writer concludes that the flouting maxims is important to make communication goes smooth. When people understand the deep meaning of what speaker say, misunderstanding will not occur in the end of conversation.
