AN ANALYSIS OF METAPHOR AS FOUND IN A NUMBER OF POEMS WRITTEN BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

A poem is not is not always understandable. In fact, not many people can easily interpret the real message behind a a whole poem or even only a line of a poem. The writer is intrigued to analyze the poem especially the ones that are made by William Wordsworth (1798-1850). This paper focuses on the metaphor and metaphorical mappings contained in a number of William Wordsworth poems. Metaphor is comparison between two things essentially unlike, and can be similarly expressed and understood across cultures for it enlightens and structure human experience. Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. The purpose of this paper is to find the metaphor and metaphorical mappings contained in those poems. The theories used in analyzing the data are theories proposed by Lakoff & Johnson (1980) and Kovecses (2003). Further discussion of the meaning of the metaphor is defined based on the content of the entire poem. From the data analysis, the writer found five of metaphors to express happiness, love , animal, nature, and life. Keywords: metaphors, metaphorical mappings, poem, William Wordsworth
