A STUDY OF SLANG USED INROUNDERS MOVIE

Language can be divided into formal language and informal language. Formal \nand informal are reflected by the situation when language was used. Slang is \ncategorized as informal language that used in informal situation. Slang is something \nthat everyone often use but can not defined it precisely. It is more dynamic, \nmetaphorical, and shorter-live than ordinary language. Slang has many function and \nvarieties. They consist of a great number of vocabularies created continually and then \nforgotten. \nSlang is one example of language variation found in society. It represents \ncertain culture, identity, and social group of someone. It is found in all language and \nall time periods. It varies from past to present and from region to region. Slang is only \nunderstood by certain community and also change by time. It means slang can be \ndifferent in each area. Akmajian, et.al (1995:287) says that “specific areas of slang \nare often associated with a particular social of group and because anybody can speak \nof teenage slang, underworlds (criminal) slang, the slang of the drug culture, etc.”. \nSlang is evidence of creativity language user. The use of slang has introduced \nmany new words that can be from the standard language and it can enrich the \n3 \nlanguage. For example, the word hellbent is considered as slang because there is a \ncombination of two words: hell and bent. Slang hellbent means ‘reckless’. Fromkin \nand Rodman (1990:264) state that “ slang often consists of ascribing totally new \nmeaning from old words”. Its means that slang also extend the meaning of word, such \nas grass and pot widened their meaning to ‘marijuana’. \nSlang is unconventional words or phrases that are used to express either \nsomething new or something old in new way. There are many interested things to be \nresearched in slang area, one of them is the construction of slang. Maurer (2003:3) \nstated that “ slang created based on such forms as metaphor, simile, folk etymology, \ndistortion of sounds in words, generalization, specialization, clipping, the use of \nacronyms, elevation and degeneration, and borrowings from foreign languages”. \nSlang spreads quickly because it is used in several television programs, \nespecially music and movie. One of movies, which used several slang terms, is \nRounders. It is a movie telling about two friends who need to quickly earn enough \ncash playing poker to pay off a large debt. The scenes of this movie often occur \naround the casino. Slang may be found in the casino, because it is an informal place. \nMoreover, there is not appropriate to use formal language in the casino. Therefore, \nslang makes language more picturesque that give a great sense to this movie. \nThere are many interested area to study in slang, one of them is the \nconstruction of slang as proposed by Jdewitt (2006). Slang used in this movie is categorized as poker slang. Therefore, the writer interested in conducting the research \nentitiled “A Study of Slang Used in Rounders Movie” in which the characters use \nslang.
