慢性閉塞性肺疾患（chronic obstructive pulmonary disease：COPD）患者の大多数は喫煙経験を有する高齢者であり，非COPD喫煙高齢者に比べて高い頻度で呼吸器合併症・全身併存症を持つことが多く，全身炎症の関与が推察されている．併存症がCOPD増悪など，COPDの自然歴に影響を及ぼすことや，β遮断薬やスタチンなど，心血管系・代謝系併存症に対する薬物加療がCOPD経過に影響を及ぼす可能性などが指摘されており，COPD診療では全身性疾患として対応する必要がある．
