Long-Term Pavement Performance Program for Years 1992-1997: A Strategic Plan

Abstract

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) began operational management of the Strategic Highway Research Program's (SHRP) Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program on July 1, 1992. This is in accordance with the original program's plan which designated the LTPP as a 20-year effort, the first 5 of which were conducted under the SHRP. The LTPP is an international in-service pavement performance monitoring program. The FHWA LTPP Division is responsible for the management and coordination of the data collection efforts on more than 2,000 test sections located across the United States and Canada. The Division is also responsible for the coordination of data base management for more than 400 test sections located in 14 other countries. This paper will discuss the FHWA's strategic research plan for years 1992 through 1997. As the data collection and data base development progress, the scope and depth of the data analysis will be expanded to establish the relationships among pavement performance and design, materials, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, traffic, environment, and geographic locations.
