CONCRETE STRUCTURES IN CROATIA - - THE LEGACY AND CONTEMPORARY PROJECTS

Croatia has long-standing tradition of concrete construction celebrating an entire century of structural concrete. It was already in 1900 that the first reinforced concrete structure was built in the region. Over the next hundred years many striking examples of fine engineering in concrete material followed, including construction of numerous bridges and buildings of various purposes. The paper contains only a selection of some of the most impressive or challenging structures built in concrete in Croatia, highlighting contemporary projects. Great achievements in bridge engineering in Croatia were made over the last several years, many of them related to extension of national motorway network. On the other hand fast growing cities and industry development brought about an increase in construction of buildings and industrial plants, many of them in concrete. In the course of these extensive tasks numerous bridges and buildings of many different structural types have been competently designed and skillfully constructed often under very short deadlines.
