The Violating of Grice's maxims found on the online Jakarta Post headline statements on politics

Abstract

A headline is an important part of a newspaper. It can be seen from how it \nis written: big and bold. Through a headline, journalists try to communicate to \nreaders by giving a preview of what the article it \nrepresents is about. Therefore, it \nhas to be written clearly to be understood easily. In communication, it is important \nto follow the Cooperative Principle so that the information given is informative, \nclear, and relevant to the receiver. \nThis study aims \nto investigate whether headlines on the online Jakarta Post \non Politics follow Grice’s Maxims. There are three maxims that are analyzed in \nthis study, \nmaxim of quantity, maxim of manner, and maxim of relevance. \nThis study can be significant for journalism \nfield since it analyzes newspaper. It can \nalso be useful in education field especially in writing field related to news item. \nThis study is a qualitative study which analyzes 41 headlines on Politics \ntaken from www.thejakartapost.com \nin December 2015. The data are analyzed \nusing the Cooperative Principle theory. \nThey are put in a table that contains the \nheadlines and the three maxims analyzed in this study. \nAfter the analysis of the data, it was found that most \nof the headlines on \nJakarta Post on Politics still follow the Grice’s Maxims. One violation of maxim \nof quantity and maxim of relevance was found. The most violations happen to \nmaxim of manner for the headlines are ambiguous and obscure.
