Abstract
Highway Maintenance and Management System Based on GIS is the foundation of modernizing the highway maintenance and management, while relevant research and development on this topic is just at an initial stage in China. This research is aiming at solving existing problems of highway maintenance and management, by utilizing several technologies including GIS spatial database, GIS model management and analysis, and GIS spatial data visualization. By investigating and analyzing the organization structure, main business, business workflow and information flow of highway maintenance and management sectors, the architecture of Highway Maintenance and Management System which is based of highway spatial database and model database is proposed. The system architecture consists of five components, including highway maintenance database management sub-system, fieldwork damage collecting sub-system, office automation sub-system, maintenance model database sub-system and GIS platform, as shown in Figure 1. Through the research of system architecture, some technological difficulties for system development is proposed,such as highway maintenance attribute data and spatial data integration, model database and GIS integration, GIS and existing highway maintenance and management system integration. So this research is stressing on integration of highway maintenance attribute data and spatial data by using dynamic subsection means, integration of multi-sources maintenance data, design and implementation of spatial database and decision-making support model database.
