A scalable IPv6 multihoming mechanism based on controlled path advertisement

Abstract

The use of geographical information is one of the current issues in multihoming services in the IPv6 networks. Geo for Now [I. van Beinjnum, Oct. 2002], one of them, allocates the addresses based on information of the geographical information and provides a method to settle the problem, such as the number of entries in the global routing table of DFZ, is increased when multihoming is applied. However, I. van Beinjnum (Oct. 2002) must assign new addresses for the multihoming technique as well as bring the problems of scalability when the sites requesting the multihoming service are increased. Therefore, this paper proposes a new mechanism that applies both the multihoming technique of IPv4 without any change to IPv6 through the geographical information, and solves the scalability problem. The proposed mechanism uses the geographical information and the extended BGP's properties and restricts the propagation of route information that might be occur in multihoming. Consequently, the mechanism does not have the scalability problem and provides the multihoming service in the same way as in the IPv4 because it is primarily used in multihoming services of IPv4.
