Abstract
It is the project manager's responsibility to make sure that the project is delivered. One of the primary keys to the success of a project, however, is not technical. It is, rather, the way that all of the individuals associated with the project work together toward the common goal of getting the project completed. Not only a project manager must juggle all of the on-going work, but in addition to that he or she has to manage all of the people-related issues that are involved when any group of individuals are working together. That can prove to be very challenging. A project manager has the dual challenge of not only leading a successful project (which benefits the organization), but also the opportunity to develop his or her own professional skill set (which benefits the manager and his or her career). Everyone is aware of the textbook definition of management as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. However, what does this mean as it relates to project management? This chapter elaborates the management aspect of project management; it describes various skills and qualities that are required of a project manager such as: Visionary leadership, communication, Negotiating skills, Problem solving, Integrity, and Team orientation and delegation.
