In 1978 China entered a new era of reform and opening-up, and has since undergone profound transformation economically, socially, and culturally. The change in the political realm has been less impressive. The shift from the Cultural Revolution’s obsession with continuous revolution under a proletarian dictatorship to social relaxation and economic development has been truly phenomenal. Meanwhile there is still a long way to go to realize a genuine political reform that was first openly called for during the Beijing Democracy Wall Movement in 1978–1979.
