Glimpses of the Past

Bernard Singer, an eminent Polish Jewish writer and for many years, up to 1939, President of the Syndicale of Jewish Journalists in Warsaw, has been living in London since the last war and is a member of the staff of The Economist. In the first volume of his Memoirs, Moje Nalewki (‘My Naiewkis’), written in Polish and published recently in Warsaw, he presents a vivid picture of Jewish Warsaw at the turn of the century up to the outbreak of the First World War. The following two chapters from this book are published here for the first time in an English translation.
