Improving Road Safety through the System of Tehnical Inspection of Vehicles

Abstract

Withering fact is that Croatia today because of road accidents has a direct loss of social values at least in the amount of two percent of GDP, while some estimates put the total losses from traffic accidents reaching four percent of GDP. In all statistical data and analyzes as the biggest cause of accidents is referred to driver, while 0.2% of traffic accidents cause traffic accidents were technical defective of vehicle. However, analyzing the data that in the European Union that 6 - 8% of traffic accidents are caused with vehicles which was technically incorrect and that in Republic of Croatia 20% of the vehicles has not passed the inspection, it can be assumed that the number of road accidents which cause technical defective of vehicle significantly higher. The average age of all vehicles in the Republic of Croatia is over 12 years which corroborates the inconsistency of data about the causes of traffic accidents. Consequently, this paper will analyze the complete system of technical inspection of vehicles and will be detected out most identified errors on a regular technical inspection of vehicles. Based on the analysis it will be proposed measures to improve the implementation of the technical review, which would indirectly contribute to greater road safety. The proposed measures will be also aimed to harmonization of technical inspection in the Republic of Croatia with the European Union.
