Overcoming the Challenges of Fixing a Displaced Wharf

Abstract

Shortly after completion of constructing Port Freeport’s new multi-purpose wharf, significant differential horizontal movement and vertical settlement of the wharf was detected. These movements far exceeded the anticipated displacements expected for this wharf. Placing it into service in its current condition and loading it with heavy cargo and equipment would have caused more damage and potential structural failure. To prevent further deterioration and to restore the wharf to its intended function, Port Freeport authorized repair work for its newly constructed wharf. This paper presents an overview of issues encountered during the wharf remediation work and their resolution, mostly employing simplified methods to efficiently tackle complex engineering and construction issues. It provides a better understanding and appreciation on how to effectively address field and design issues without compromising overall engineering design and schedule. This paper also emphasizes the importance of promptly recognizing problems as they arise and approaching them methodically.
