Abstract

Owing to the intertexuality with the Book of Changes, painting in the Wei and Jin Dynasties and Six Dynasties Period presents its own unique value from the dimension of image and the value lies in the fact that image and visual existence of painting is an essential way for sages to experience Tao. In the process of presenting its own independent value, painting shows its value in the study of classics of Confucian poetics and its own autonomous domain, which makes it possible to develop twoway communication between painting and poetry. However,as the carrier of poetry, language has its own defect that it is unable to fully convey meaning, which calls for the integration of painting into po-em and indicates the prescriptive effect of painting on poem and it is unavoidable for poem to imitate painting. Following the visuality of painting, poetry undergoes the process of visualization. Consequently, poetry and painting begin to be complementary to each other. Moreover, the concept of painting-and-poetry complementarity evolves from the one-way process of poeticization of poetry into the two-way process of mutual effects of painting and poetry on each other.
