Abstract

Objective To compare the recovery time,safety and tolerability after sevoflurane and isoflurane anesthesia.Methods Total 222 adult subjects scheduled for elective surgery of 2-3 hours in duration undergoing general anesthesia managed were randomized into two groups with 113 cases in sevoflurane anesthesia group and 109 cases in isoflurane anesthesia group.The efficacy of sevoflurane/isoflurane anesthesia was assessed using emergence time,the time of tracheal extubation,time of achievement of a modified Aldrete score of 9(or above)in PACU,and the relationship between the time to recovery and the amount of anesthetic agent administered.Results 222 patients,220 cases completed the study,including 111 cases in sevoflurane group and 109 cases in isoflurance group.The emergence time from anesthesia occurred in an average of 5.4 min earlier(P0.01),the time to achievement of a modified Aldrete of 9 was 8.4 min shorter(P0.01),and the time to tracheal extubation was 4.6 min shorter(P0.01)in sevoflurane group than those in isoflurane group.All AEs occurred throughout the whole study were mild or moderate in intensity in both groups and there was no significant difference in the type or frequency of adverse events between sevoflurane group and isoflurane groups.Conclusion Sevoflurane can provide a significantly short emergence time and earlier recovery than isoflurane.
