Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical significance of interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene expression in breast cancer. Methods:The IL-8 mRNA was measured by a real-time quantitative PCR in 46 cases of breast cancer and adjuvant normal breast tissues. The ratio of tumor to normal tissue (T/N) of IL-8 expression was then calculated for each case. This value was correlated with the clinical-pathological parameters.Results:IL-8 mRNA was detectable in all tumors tested. Using T/N ratio ≥2 as cut-off point, 65.2 % (30/46 cases) of tumors were defined as high expression. Significant correlation was found between the T/N ratio and histopathology, stage of disease and lymph node involvement.IL-8 expression was not significantly related to the patient′s age. Conclusion:The IL-8 gene was highly expressed in breast cancer and the increased expression was more frequent in early stages than in late stages.
