Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of interleukin-8(IL-8) gene expression in breast cancer. Methods The IL-8 mRNA on breast was measured by a real-time quantitative PCR in 110 cases of breast cancer and adjuvant normal breast tissues. The ratio of tumor to normal tissue(T/N) of IL-8 expression was then calculated for each case.Estogen recepot(ER) and progestgen receptor(PR) were tested by immunohistochemical assay in 110 cases of breast cancer. This value of IL-8 expression was correlated with the clinical-pathological parameters. Results IL-8 mRNA was detectable in all tumors tested.Using T/N ratio≥2 as cut-off point,55.5%(61/110) of tumors were defined as high expression.IL-8 expression was not significantly related to the patient.Similarly, the patients with tumor size5 had higher IL-8 expression than those other tumor sizes, but there are no significant statistical difference between them.Significant correlation was found between the T/N ratio and lymph node involvement.IL-8 expression was clearly overexpressed in most ER-negative breast cancer, whereast no significant level coulded bedetdcted in breast cancer. Conclusion In breast cancer, the IL-8 gene expression is highly expressed and associated with some clinical factors and pathological features, possibly it is a good prognostic factor.
