Abstract

The Han and Tang Dynasties made indelible contributions to the formation of a multi-nationality nation in China's history. However, strategies of management in the southwest borders present obvious differences between the two dynasties.Although they all administered the southwest region for several centuries, the results were very different in practical facts. It's beyond a doubt that Ailao region belonged to the Tang Dynasty and the establishment of Yongchang County showed strength of the administration in the southwest region during the Han Dynasty, but the rise of Nanzhao and the Xi-er River war became a result of administrating southwest region for 109 years. We believe that the mollification with ulterior motivation of the Tang Dynasty in the border areas is necessary, but loss of the civil government is its fault. The consolidation of the border relies on armed forces and the mollification with ulterior motivation.
