Effects of calcitonin on proliferation of osteoblast-like cells in vitro

Objective To observe the effects of calcitonin on the proliferation of osteoblast\|like cells. Methods Calcitonin at different concentrations was added to the culture medium containing osteoblast\|like cells and then cultured with the cells for 3 days. The proliferation of osteoblast\|like cells was tested by MTT assay. Results Except the 1 mIU/L concentration, other concentrations of calcitonin promoted the proliferation of osteoblast\|like cells. Though there were no significant differences between those concentrations, the effects tended to get stronger as the concentrations increased. All concentrations of dexamethasone could promote the proliferation of osteoblast\|like cells in somewhat dose\|dependent manner. Conclusion Calcitonin can promote the proliferation of osteoblast\|like cells. That may be the mechanism by which calcitonin does good effect on osteoporosis.\;
