A Review of Liang Qichao's Research into Qing Academic History

Liang Qichao is an important figure in the research on Qing academic history. He paid great attention to the investigation of the ethos of the times, made an attempt to compare and contrast it with the history of western learning, and made original interpretations of the origin, schools, and methods of the Qing learning. But Liang's research also has many shortcomings, mainly in his simplistic comparison between Chinese and western learning and his cutting off the relationship between Qing learning and the neo-Confucianism of the Song and Ming dynasties. Also, lack of document preparation leads to emptiness and shallowness in his argumentation.
