Abstract

The total antioxidant effect of extracts from Lysimachia clethroides was assayed by three methods,namely,1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging,〔2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid〕 diammonium salt(ABTS) radical scavenging, and ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP) assay. The methanol extract from L.clethroides showed higher DPPH radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 12.28 μg/mL than that of positive control BHT with IC50 value of 18.79 μg/mL.The methanol extract showed less ABTS radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 7.52 μg/mL than that of BHT with IC50 value of 6.04 μg/mL.The methanol extract exhibited ferric reducing antioxidant power with FRAP value of 1179.40±46.70 μmol TE/g,lower than that of BHT with FRAP value of 1748.49±3.46 μmol TE/g.Among three extracts of L.clethroides, the methanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activity. The novelty of this work has been confirmed in Technology Novelty Search Report No.2008113 provided by Henan Provincial Institute of Medical Intelligence on May 30,2008.
