Effect of combination of mesalazine and bifico on serum SOD,MDA in patients with ulcerative colitis

Objective To evaluate the effect of combination of mesalazine and bifico on serum levels of malondialdehyde(MDA)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)in patients with ulcerative colitis(UC). Methods Thirty-eight patients with UC were randomly divided into two groups:control group(n=19) and treatment group(n=19).Patients in control group were given mesalazine,while patients in treatment group were additionally given bifico 420 mg,tid for 2 months as a course.Serum MDA level and SOD activity were detected in UC patients before and after the treatment,and the clinical curative effect was assessed and compared between 2 groups. Results After treatment,MDA levels in two groups were both decreased(P0.05),while SOD activities were increased(P0.05).The difference of MDA and SOD before and after treatment was statistically significant between two groups(P0.05).The total effective rate was higher in treatment group than in control group(P0.05). Conclusion Compared with single administration of mesalazine,combination of mesalazine and bifico can more effectively reduce the serum level of MDA,and increase the SOD activity in patients with ulcerative colitis.
