Abstract

[Objective] To research prospectively the effect of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation(NIPPV) in patients with type Ⅱ respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). [Methods] We analysed the data of arterial blood gas (pH, PaO2, PaCO2), the course of disease in the hospital and the rate of endotracheal intubation in the 21 patients who recerived NIPPV. The control group of 25 patients received the same management as the study group but did not receive NIPPV treatment. [Results] The data of arterial blood gas had been improved significantly in study group after 24h NIPPV.The course of disease in the hospital and the rate of endotracheal intubation in the study group were better than those of control group (P 0.05). [Conclusion] NIPPV is a good method to cure respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It can reduce the frequency of cannulas and length of hospital stay. Early appliment can delay the progress of disease.
