Abstract
Recently, the research of the paper on discourse mainly focuses on a single type study like introduction, method and abstract and so on and lack the study of the relations between the different types.Based on research by Samraj(2005) on genre set, this paper attempts to compare the generic structure and communicative purposes of journal article abstracts and introductions in both English and Chinese within the field of economics.Forty papers from English and Chinese economic journals were collected and used as data for analysis. Results show that 1) article abstracts and introductions in both English and Chinese are closely related in respect of generic structures and communicative purposes, but vary in degree across the two languages;2) cross-cultural differences exist in the generic structures of abstracts and introductions of the two languages. The study of this kind also helps raise awareness of Chinese scholars' sense of national identity and active participation in the academic dialogues in the international arena.
