Abstract
Based on the ecological footprint concept and calculation method,the ecological footprint of Gansu for the year 2003 is calculated and analyzed in this paper.The result indicates that the ecological footprint demand of Gansu is 1.5890 hm2 per capita,while the ecological footprint supply is only 0.7922 hm2 per capita,and there is an ecological footprint deficit of 0.7968 hm2 per capita.Larger portion of ecological footprint demand or the footprint deficit result from the consumption of energy and grassland products.The paper has also compared the ecological footprint values of China and some areas as well as their GDP created by unit footprint.The main potential approaches of reducing ecological footprint of Gansu are to improve energy and industrial structures.
