Abstract
Niu Shuyu,a noted scholar of Shuowen Jiezi(说文) studies in the Qing Dynasty who exhibited little interest in seeking officialdom through imperial examinations, was intent on studying ancient writings and became an expert at lexicology, phonology, and explanations of words in ancient books. His representative works on Shuowen Jiezi(说文) studies include Collations of Shuowen Jiezi(说文),Proofreading of Duan Yucai's Annotations on Shuowen Jiezi(说文) and Textual Research on the Newly Added Words into Shuowen Jiezi(说文).The fact that there had been few in-depth and thorough studies of Niu's works by previous scholars led to the insufficient recognition of Niu's place in Shuowen Jiezi(说文) studies historically. Therefore,it is of great significance to comb through Niu's studies over Shuowen Jiezi(说文).
