Abstract

Taken Taihu Lake as the study area, ten items of water quality parameters observed in thirty-three observation stations in 2007 were analyzed by the principal component analysis(PCA).The first principal component(PC) reflects the changes due to the eutrophication and organic contaminant. While DO and pH are the main parameters responsible for the second PC.The third PC indicates the predominance of changes due to temperature and coliforms. The water quality of Taihu Lake was evaluated by the first principal components. The Kriging interpolation was applied to estimate its spatial distribution, which showed the most serious area was still happed in the west-north and Wuli lake located in the north of Taihu Lake. The results shows that the principal component analysis is an efficient method of water quality evaluation.
