Abstract
In the preface to his masterpiece,WEN DIAO LONG,LIU Xie maintains thatWEN XIN actually refers to the principles of writing. On the one hand,WEN XIN is orientated towards the starting point of the writing process and generated naturally into being; on the other, it is directed to the end stage of the process or goal of composing, and the traditional political and ethical function of writing should be exerted. When these two sides come into a conflict, a natural combination of the two in the form of the harmony between emotion and reason is suggested.
