Protection and Transfer of Cultural Heritage:A Comparison Study of Two Historical Blocks along the Grand Canal in Zhejiang

Xiao-He Street and Gong-Cheng Bridge Historical Block are the two traditional neighborhoods on the banks of the Grand Canal in Hangzhou area. Hangzhou now is experiencing highspeed economic development, rapid urbanization process and multicultural trend which are inevitably impacting the historical blocks. Consequently the traditional allays, constructions and landscapes are changing, industrial facilities and function blocks are replaced, and the traditional livingways are also disappearing. It is urgent to protect historical blocks and to develop local economy for a sustainable development by using the existing conditions. Based on the protection planning of these two historical blocks, this paper explores the similarities and differences between these two historical blocks, hoping helpful to the similar protection of historical blocks.
