Abstract
Objective:To study cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)expression in hepatocellular carcinoma and the relationships between COX-2 and MMP-2, MMP-9. Methods: The expressions of COX-2, MMP-2 and MMP-9 were determined by immunohistochemical method in 43 hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, 6 hepatocirrhosis tissues and 10 normal controls. Results: COX-2 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues was higher than those in cirrhosis tissues and normal. There was no significant difference of COX-2 among sex, age, tumor size, tumor capsule, presence of portal vein thrombosis, the level of -fetoprotein and histo-differentiation (P 0.05). COX-2 expression was correlated with MMP-2 and MMP-9 expressions (r=0.508, r = 0.368, P 0.01). MMP-2 expression was positively correlated to MMP-9 expression(r=0.472, P 0.01). Conclusion: COX-2 may stimulate the invasion and metastasis in hepatocellular carcinoma by increasing MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression.
