Mental health status of middle or high school students in Nanning

Abstract

【Objective】 To explore the mental health status of middle or high school students in Nanning and provide scientific basis for mental health education. 【Methods】 Stratified cluster sample was selected from 7 middle schools of Nanning,2 700 middle school students and their backgrounds were included in the investigation.Instruments comprised Symptom Check List-90(SCL-90) and self-designed questionnaire. 【Results】 14.5% of middle school students had mental problems.The mental problems of middle school students included(from high to low) obsessive-compulsive,interpersonal,hostility etc.The mean scores in 7 factors of SCL-90 were all higher than the counterpart in the norms of Chinese youth.Females had higher scores in all factors of SCL-90. 【Conclusions】 Middle school students in Nanning have more prominent mental problems and need more attention.The mental health education should be emphasized for middle and high school students to improve their mental health status.
