Abstract

Objective:To investigate the effects of metformin on osteoblast proliferation, differentiation and mineralization from rat mandible for verifying the hypothesis of dental implant administration. Methods: Primary osteoblasts were isolated and cultured. Cell proliferation assay, alkaline phosphatase(ALP)activity, calcium uptake and mineralization were detected in different groups with the treatment of metformin in medium. Results: Metformin significantly increased cell proliferation and ALP activity, promoted the calcium uptake and formation of nodules of mineralization in osteoblasts. Conclusions: These results show a osteogenic effect of metformin on primary osteoblasts from rat mandible.
