Abstract
Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) are conventional backlight units for thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) monitor and TV. Compared with CCFL backlight unit, LED backlight unit has a lot of advantages, such as good color reproduction, high contrast, high brightness, and so on. In last several years, LED backlight technologies applied in large-sized-TFT-LCD have been making a great progress. This novel backlight technology will be reviewed in this paper. Red, Green and Blue Light Emitting Diodes (RGB LED) can be used as the backlight as well as white LED. Then direct backlight structure and side backlight structure are also introduced .In conclusion, LED backlight is deduced to be the most perfect backlight for large-sized-TFT-LCD in the future.
